India records 2.47 lakh cases of Coronavirus (As per govt. records). The deadly pandemic and widespread disease have made the situation even worse with the onset of its second wave in India. The new mutated Coronavirus in India is largely responsible for the havoc, deaths, and chaos within the country. A new study by WHO reveals that the mutated and lethal Indian COVID 19 variant is now found in 44 countries across the world. The massive surge in Coronavirus in India has put the world to a shock and each country is contributing in its way to help India sail through the tough time.

The increasing cases of COVID 19 in the Indian subcontinent have the maximum effect on Maharashtra followed by Karnataka and Kerela (As per Statista). While lockdown is diminishing the cases and mal effects of the lethal virus, the slow vaccination drive is adding to the fear so widely spread amongst the Indian citizens.

The Current Vaccination Status Of India

According to mygov.in, the total vaccination doses in India are 18, 22,20,164 (dated 17/5/2021). The vaccinations available in India for Coronavirus in India are Covishield, Covaxin, and Sputnik V.

  • Covishield

Manufactured by the world’s largest vaccine manufacturer, Serum Institute of India, Covishield should be administered to 18 years and above individuals as per the fact sheet of Covishield on the Serum Institute of India web page.

The doses recommended are in two slots in a difference of 4-6 weeks or even 12 weeks as per a study. The Covishield vaccination has been shown in clinical trials to prevent COVID 19. However, the duration of protection is unknown.

The Oxford- Astrazeneca vaccination Covishield may have side effects too.

  • Covaxin

Following the TOI, the Bharat indigenous Covaxin is said to neutralize many variants including the B.1.617 and B.1.1.7. The efficacy rate of Covaxin is 81%. Developed by Bharat Biotech and ICMR, this vaccination as per bharatbiotech.com should be given in two doses. The second dose shall be administered with 28 days of the first dose. 

The Covaxin fact sheet mentions that the vaccination can be given to individuals above 18 years and prior health conditions must be mentioned to the administrator.

  • Sputnik V

Dr. Reddy's Laboratories have launched Sputnik V in India. The vaccination as per the news has a 91% efficacy. The Sputnik V vaccination originally manufactured by the Gamaleya Research Institute of Epidemiology and Microbiology in Moscow recommends a double jab for the vaccination. This vaccination is a widely used vaccination across the nation in India.

The Vaccine Maitri By India

The much-questioned vaccine Maitri by India has supplied vaccinations to approximately 95 countries including Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal Bhutan, Maldives, Mauritius, etc. dispatched in 2021, the total supplies to these countries roundabout to 663.698 (in lakhs) as per the mea.gov.in dated 17/5/2021.

The vaccine Maitri is an initiative by the Government of India that started in 2021 to supply vaccinations against COVID 19 to other countries across the globe.
