The Chairperson Of Blossom Kochhar Group Of Companies, Dr. Blossom Kochhar, is a beauty industry veteran with an experience of over 35 years. Dr. Blossom Kochhar cannot be ignored whenever you think of the evolution of the business in the beauty industry. Twenty years ago, she was one of the firsts to set up a one day spa in Delhi. She is a firm believer in the therapeutic power of different fragrances, which made her launch the Aroma Magic line of cosmetics and essential oils under the Blossom Kochhar Group Of Companies. Dr. Blossom Kochhar has also been an educator and is training thousands of students who are aspiring to become salon experts. While living in Ooty, Blossom got the idea of aromatherapy. Now, she is a pioneer of aromatherapy in the country and is well celebrated globally for her work and contribution to the beauty industry. She has always been a promoter of the motto that beauty and wellness come equally from inside, as it comes from the outside. Being a master of holistic beauty in India, she believes that beauty has to be addressed on the body, mind as well as on emotional levels. Blossom Kochhar has always believed that beauty comes with physical wellness.
She is a board member of the Beauty and Wellness Sector Skin Council of India. Dr. Blossom is also the President of Organization Mondial Centre Coiffure (OMC)- Paris and Intercoiffure Mondial India (ICD). She is also the technical expert at the Central Board Of Secondary Education (CBSE) for the Vocational Education in Beauty and Wellness. For her contributions to the beauty industry, Dr. Kochhar has been honored with numerous awards. In 2013, she was awarded the Gates and Custodian Person of the Year 2013. In the same year, she was awarded the Universal Humanity Award. She has been awarded the Beautypolis Award for her contribution to the beauty industry and also for promoting aromatherapy. On March 10, 2014, she was awarded the International Women’s Day Award by the Indian Council for UN Relations. In May 2014, she was awarded the Best Women Entrepreneur Of The Year Award in the IVth Indian Education Awards.

- Brief about your journey!
My entire childhood was spent in the Nilgiris among coffee and tea plantations, and from there, I got my name Blossom. While I was in a boarding school, I did my first hair cut more out of curiosity than fun, and from there, I developed the love for this industry. It was my husband who encouraged me to pursue beauty and aromatherapy as a career, and I open my first brand Blossom Kochhar Aroma Magic in the year 1993 after successfully running a beauty, hair, and makeup academy for years.
- Why did you choose the beauty industry?
Because this allows me to make people look beautiful, become happy, and feel good about themselves. The smile that I see on their face after they get a service done still inspires me every day.
- When did you start your venture officially?
I started it 35 years ago, first, my academy followed by Aroma Magic.
- Have you always wanted to focus on beauty?
Yes, something that started as a hobby became a passion and then a profession. This is what I always wanted to do after the first time I held a pair of hair cutting scissors in my hand at school.
- Your views on Indian beauty market and its global stance!
The Indian beauty market has seen a major boom, people from the past few years have started moving to more natural and organic products and India is a land of such ingredients. We have witnessed so many homegrown beauty brands that have made a wave across the globe.
- Indian Beauty Market and changes Pre and post COVID 19!
Pre-COVID, the customers still had a fixation for international brands. They wanted to try new face masks, makeup products that other countries were offering but, post COVID I feel we all will be focusing on Indian brands, local brands that are manufactured in the country itself. Though the market has gone slow for beauty products, we all are hoping to bounce back with new organic and natural ingredients that will surely get the customers interested.
- What is it that you enjoy the most about this industry?
The chance to meet a new set of people every day and the love each one has for me. I also love making people look beautiful, and through my products, I just don’t help them look great but, because of the essential oils in our products, they feel great too.
- When did you open an academy, and why?
I started the academy before I launched my cosmetics. When I entered the industry, I realized that there was no scientific system in this field, no one was actually teaching the technicalities of hair cut or the right products to use as per skin type. Also, there was no formal education system in this field and this encouraged me to open my academy. I got Pivot Point (International Hair academy) to India and started training. Today I can proudly say that some of the leading names in the industry are from our academy.
- Are there any changes that you would want to see in the beauty education sector?
Yes, I would like the people in this industry to concentrate on cosmetology, in which you learn beauty, hair, and makeup under one course. Every technician in this field should have an understanding of all the elements of this industry, and then they can specialize in one field. But it is essential to learn all the elements.
- What is your vision for the academy and your products and other services?
For my academy, I will be focusing more on cosmetology and teach my students everything about beauty, hair, and makeup. Also, we will be training our students to become entrepreneurs rather than become job seekers. As for Aroma Magic, we will be concentrating on hair, wellness, and hygiene products.
- Are you planning on diversifying or adding anything new to your folio?
Yes, we always keep on adding new products to our product line, and we will be adding products that will cater to men and children.
- What is that one change in the beauty industry in India that you never expected would take place?
The Indian beauty market has always been fixated with Skin Lightening, even while getting makeup done, girls/women wanted to look fairer but, now we are witnessing a change thanks to the younger generation who is comfortable in their skin and are accepting themselves as they are. I believe more than fair skin you should have a glowing and smooth skin.
- Is there any message that you would want to give to the people associated with your industry?
I would urge my industry people to accept the change that we are witnessing and change with it because this will be the new normal, and it is going to stay here for a long time. I suggest them to educate themselves in all the elements of the industry, that a beautician should know how to do makeup whereas a hairdresser should know how to do basic makeup. Multi skilling is what will help them survive during these tough times.
