It is mentioned that friends and relatives of Brahmachari used to bring fragrant substances or sandalwood paste at religious ceremonies, which they applied on their bodies and washed it off with scented water boiled with herbs. 

India is the only country where the scents are divided into 21 categories, the reason behind this is there have been several customs of fragrance in our country. The Indian government had declared 1989 as the "Fragrance Year". In this year, several fragrance experts came together and discussion was held about 500 years old history of fragrance in India.

  • In global comparison, most revenue is generated in the United States (US$8,301m in 2020).
  • Concerning total population figures, per person revenues of US$0.2 are generated in 2020.

Indian fragrance market today is mainly dominated by deodorants, several types of deodorant is available in the Indian fragrance market and according to Research and Markets, India deodorant market is expected to grow with a CAGR of more than 15% over next five years out of which the aerosol/spray form of deodorant is expected to continue its dominance over 2017-2022.

1. Deodorants- These fragrances are applied to the body to alter the body odor which takes place due to bacterial growth. Deodorants have 1-2% of perfume essence, they don't have a long-lasting impact, stays only up to 4 hours at max. As it is not that long-lasting a bottle of 100-150ml of perfume ends even before a month. Deodorants are pocket friendly. 

2. Perfumes- Perfumes contain up to 25% perfume essence, EDP has the highest while EDC or Eau de Fraiche has the least of perfume essence in the perfume category. A person can take a whiff of your perfume from distance all day long if you are someone in the desire of amazing silage, perfume is the most appropriate choice for you. It gives a long-lasting impact for up to 12 hours, a tiny bottle of perfume can last for a couple of months.  

3. Body mist- Body mist is also well known as a body spray or body splash, they are kind of similar to perfumes. But body mist does not contain a high percentage of fragrant oils, unlike perfumes. They are a much milder version of perfumes, and they can be sprayed directly on the skin, rather than on clothes. It wears off much sooner and requires multiple sprays throughout the day, but these are also kind of pocket friendly.

According to a 1991 study by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 95 percent of the perfume chemicals are derived from petroleum like acetone, ethanol, benzaldehyde, formaldehyde, limonene, methylene chloride, camphor, ethyl acetate, linalool and benzyl alcohol, Phthalates, and synthetic musks.

According to a report by Markets and Markets, the spreading awareness about health has created a surge in demand for natural or organic fragrances, further making the organic perfumes lead the market, the data says, natural fragrance market size is projected to reach USD 4.3 million by 2024 from USD 2.7 million in 2019, at a CAGR of 9.6%. Increasing the use of natural fragrance ingredients in various applications such as fine fragrances, personal care & cosmetics, and household care is expected to drive the natural fragrance market.
