The master of sustainable and ethical fashion, Samant Chauhan gained popularity after the display of his Kamasutra collection at WIFW. This talented soul bagged three awards at the beginning of his career for ‘Most Innovative Fabric Development’ and ‘Best Design Collection.’ His unusual creations further gained a unique name in the industry.
How it all started
Born creative, Samant always wanted to work in the creative field. His affair with creativity started when he was in school. His interest in photography, Russian magazines, and radio exposed him to the international world and strengthened his fondness for the same. However, he fulfilled his father’s wish of getting a graduation degree in Physics Honors and later went on to follow his heart. His journey in the fashion industry started at NIFT where he pursued a post-graduate degree in Knitwear (KDT).
Reviving a fading art
The Bhagalpuri designer always had a soft spot for Bhagalpuri silk. Over the years the handloom industry in Bhagalpur was dying out due to a lack of patronage, with no one coming forward to save this age-old craft. His creations revived the fading industry and helped talented craftsmen come back into the business. His fascination with textiles, especially Bhagalpuri silk, has been seen in his work ever since he was in college. His firm belief in the potential of this fabric continues to motivate him to explore and innovate new fabrics and modern designs.
Bhagalpuri Silk – Giving birth to sustainable fashion
Unlike other silk, the process of making Bhagalpuri silk does not involve the killing of worms to extract filaments. The filaments are extracted only after the worm has left its cocoon. The filament extracts become very coarse after a silkworm leaves its cocoon. The filaments are then hand-woven, this attributes to its uneven texture.
Like many other materials, Bhagalpuri silk has also joined the sustainable fashion wagon. A concept, which is now gaining popularity in the fashion fraternity.
The inspiration behind the label
Still attached to his roots, Samant’s label derives its inspiration from sustainable fashion. His designs and creations beautifully bring out his love for Bhagalpuri silk. The environment-conscious designer prefers using the natural white or beige color of the fabric to bring his creations to life.
Exposure to the world
The designer’s creations have caught the world’s attention at many national and international ramps including – India Fashion Week, WOW New Zealand, London Fashion Week, Carrousel Du Louvre in Paris at the Ethical Fashion Show, ‘Design X Design Exhibition: 20under35,’ by Alliance Francaise, and Taj Pierre New York City. His motivation to promote dying textiles through his collections has gained him extensive media coverage and spotlight.
Inspired from the silk route along with Nepal, Tibet, and China; Samant’s enchanting ‘Silk Route’ collection was first revealed to the world at Amazon India Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2016. This zero-waste collection is closest to the designer’s heart as it was made with his dearest – Bhagalpuri fabric. The collection gracefully showcased various techniques like crushing, top-stitch, embroidery, and patchwork made from fabric waste.
Awards and Achievements
At a very tender age, the designer saw success, receiving various awards, beginning with Best Design Collection by NIFT. His journey to success still continues with many wins like The Most Innovative Fabric Development by NIFT, Asian Young Designer, Best Designer Gallery at the TexStyles’08 and Young Fashion Entrepreneur Award by the British Council.
