The ‘Peshwai’ Collection By Designer Gaurang Shah Showcased Historic Textiles Like Never Before At The Lakme Fashion Week Winter/ Festive 2019

Renowned Designer Gaurang Shah, he is a master of weaves, Gaurang Shah is a self-taught textile designer based in Hyderabad. He’s one of the award-winning designers of our country who has and is trying to revive the dying art of weaving and popularizing the age-old craft. At the Lakme Fashion Week Winter/ Festive 2019, Gaurang showcased an array of historic textiles set in the most glamorous manner on the ramp. ‘Peshwai’ was a lively, colourful, traditional and beautiful collection of Indian Wear displayed with utmost love on the 3rd day of the LFWWF2019.

Singer Gargi Siddhanth, disciple of Pandit Jasraj sang melodiously throughout the show. This made the beginning of the show as a set of ancient India being replayed with a contemporary twist in the modern era.

The rich textiles of Paithan that saw a rise during the Mughal Era was brought to Baroda by Peshwa Bajirao in the 18th century. The “Peshwai” collection on the runway was a grand mélange of fabrics that were from the Deccan Plateau and associated with Peshwa royalty. The designer further experimented with the checked Kota Doria turned it into a jamdaani canvas and patterned with Persian designs and mosaics.

The collection integrated and blended Bandhani an intricate artistry done on clothings from mustard seeds. Here the designer creatively played with pure white, which gently flowed into shades of yellow, orange and rose red.

The grandeur in women wear could be seen in the woven saris in dazzling weaves along with grand ethnic wear. The saris with their patterns featured motifs of birds, trees and flowers in magnificent colours and patterns. The broad glittering and dazzling gold borders as well as the rich hues of the design, turned the saris into creations that one only dreams of.

Kurtas on the ramp were witnessed in two silhouettes- Slim and full. The slim Kurtas had an elegant touch whereas the full ones were voluminous and flared. The collection of lehengas, cholis, and dupattas were in a myriad combination of glittering weaves and Bandhani designs as well as contrasting colours that brought regal splendour on the ramp. The cholis were kept simple and elegant with either short, three-quarter or long sleeves.
The men’s wear had kurtas, bundies, dhotis, dupattas and Sherwanis making a strong fashion statement in the fabulous glittering textiles.

Inspired from the literature of Baroda Palace and Dakkan, the collection was fluid flowing giving bridal wear a glamorous look in Indian Textiles. There was no doubt that, as the impressive ‘Peshwai’ collection appeared on the ramp on graceful models, it exuded a definite quality of Dakhani Royalty.

Lakmé Official Makeup Expert at Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2019, Daniel Bauer for the Gaurang show had the face glossy, contoured and highlighted. The eyes had a strong smoked out wing with bold brows. The look was completed with the Lakmé Absolute Matte Revolution Lipstick in the shade Blushing Red.
